Guillain Barre Syndrome

Guillain Barre

Unlike Mesothelioma, Hansens Disease, forms of cancer and other ailments that are allegedly caused by outside human influences, and are often connected to a large legal settlement, Guillain Barre, as far as it is now understood, is simply spread by a virus that affects the nerve endings in the human body.

Following is an excerpt from the true Guillain Barre survival story of
Gale Vogler:

"I Survived The Nightmare Of Guillain Barre;

It all started with my eyes.  Suddenly struck with double vision, little did I know that my life would soon be changed forever.  Since my blood pressure was so high that same day my Dr. started me on high blood pressure pills.  About one hour later, my hands started tingling like they had fallen asleep.  Believing that I was having a reaction to the medication, the Dr. called in a prescription for a different high blood pressure pill.

Waking up the next morning was very frightening.  My vision had changed from double to distorted, and my arms and legs were so weak, I was barely able to stand.  My husband took me to the emergency room where a battery of tests began.  I was admitted to the hospital later that day.  That night, I was introduced to a neurologist  who explained that they would be running more tests tomorrow and they would be looking for a brain tumor, MS, or possibly a stroke.  (Though the stroke seemed unlikely because my paralysis wasn't on just one side, but on both.)  That night while trying to eat dinner, I kept hitting the side of my face with my fork.  I could barely get the food to my mouth.

Each day, I got worse.  On Thursday, I was examined by an eye doctor.  She told me that she suspected I had a rare malady called Guillain-Barre Syndrome resulting from a viral infection.  In mild cases, there would be weakness and some paralysis.  In extreme cases, there would be major paralysis and if not treated properly death was a possibility.  Typically, the symptoms of Guillain-Barre Syndrome start with the legs and move up the body.  I had an even rarer form known as Miller Fisher that started with my eyes and worked its way down my body.

On Friday, a spinal tap was done to confirm this diagnosis.  It brought good news and bad news.  The good news being that Guillain-Barre Syndrome was treatable and in most cases curable IF detected early and treatment started in time.  The bad news was I would get worse before I got better, and the clock was ticking.  It had already been four days since my symptoms started.  How much damage had been done?  And, was it still reversible?

At this point, I could not swallow, I could barely move my arms, I couldn't stand, I couldn't urinate, I felt like things were crawling on me, and I itched  everywhere and couldn't scratch anything.  I had never been so miserable in my life.  And, that was only the beginning.  Things got MUCH worse in the following days and weeks and months.  Was it already too late?  Would this be how I was going to live the rest of my life?  I kept hoping it was only a nightmare.  What little sleep I got was filled with horrors, and waking up was even worse.......

Guillain-Barre is rare, frightening and sometimes fatal. There are less than 3000 cases per year diagnosed in the U.S. Consequently, even neurologists are often ill equipped to diagnose this insidious virus, leave alone treat it.
